Linen Green, Dungannon: PEACE III Programme, funded under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)

The Art piece, created in 2011, is an eighty-four foot painted mural located between the entrance and exit to the Linen Green. Each participants’ image is painted onto the mural and aged to suggest how they might have looked had they worked in the Moygashel Linen Mills. The names of these participants join the distinguished scroll of names of Moygashel residents who worked in the Linen Mills in times past.

About the Project

The project was a Partnership Project with Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council and is funded by the European Union’s PEACE III Programme, through the South West Cluster.

The Community art piece is an eighty-four foot painted mural located between the entrance and exit to the Linen Green. Each participants’ image is painted onto the mural and aged to suggest how they might have looked had they worked in the Moygashel Linen Mills. The names of these participants join the distinguished scroll of names of Moygashel residents who worked in the Linen Mills in times past.

The project was a joint collaboration between local artists Gwen Stevenson and Enda Devlin. Both artists are highly experienced in using visual artistic expression in communities and together offered all the skills and expertise required to deliver this top quality project on time and within budget. Gwen specialises in community development and peace-building work in marginalised disadvantaged interface areas and has specialised community sector training and certification to work with children. Enda is a master painter and sculpture specialising in restoration and conservation. He has specific expertise in outdoor and indoor murals, trompe l,oeil, marbling, polished plaster, gilding, stonework, faux finish, wood graining and specialist decorating.  Enda has specialized construction skills register training and certification to work at heights.

The artists ran a series of workshops in the Howard Primary School that provided an opportunity for participants to learn a variety of new skills, develop their knowledge of local Moygashel history and with the aim developing a piece of art to leave a lasting legacy.

Gwen & Enda have developed an inclusive program together with the local school and residents and have produced an outstanding piece of artwork that exceeded all expectations. Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council and the European Union’s PEACE III Programme, through the South West Cluster made this project possible through their support and funding.

The artists ran a series of workshops in the Howard Primary School that provided an opportunity for participants to learn a variety of new skills, develop their knowledge of local Moygashel history and with the aim developing a piece of art to leave a lasting legacy. We really value the support of the Moygashel residents and were delighted to lend our building and facilities to this project. We are delighted with the learning involved in this project where the children not only honed their artistic skills but also developed their knowledge of local shared community history and heritage. We pride ourselves on our community links with Moygashel and this art-work is a testament to that link which we hope to maintain and develop into the future.
